Mcdonald’s Monopoly

Everyone I know seems to be going crazy over the Monopoly Singapore game!

In fact, as of the last 2-3 weeks, I have been eating Mc Donald’s more than usual….and of course the kids are definitely not protesting!

Friends have been twittering that they are going to Mc-vomit very soon! :)

There are people even proclaiming on Facebook about the properties which they need!

Seriously, if I had Sentosa Cove or Orchard Road, would I offer it to anybody? I certainly don’t think so!

Btw, I think this has been their most successful advertising campaign since the days of Hello Kitty. Remember those long queues, where every maid and Grand parent in Singapore, was waiting in line to get a Hello Kitty for their loved ones.

I think that the catch behind the Mcdonald’s Monopoly game is that they don’t just give you 1 coupon, but they give you 8 coupons with every up-sized meal.

Psychologically, you feel closer to the winning ticket! And throwing in a few coupons that entitles you to a free apple pie, milkshake or french fries does whet the appetite as well!

Meanwhile, if you are a fan of hamburgers, this is what the Biggest Hamburger in the world looks like:

The hamburger which weighed in at 136.2 kilograms (300 pounds), beating the previous world record burger, which weighed a measly 84 kilograms (185 pounds).

I think the American Burger which came in 2nd looks more appetizing than the Japanese Burger!

Wine Tasting Table

Recently, I was invited to a dinner “The Winemaker’s Table”. It was billed as an opportunity to get up close and personal with 20 winemakers around the world. (Really quite prestigious considering there would be winemakers from award winning wineries)

Well, as I was getting ready for the dinner, I decided to put together what little experience/knowledge I have about wine:

1. I don’t drink wine! I don’t drink beer! I don’t drink!

2. It amazes me why many are preoccupied with ‘sniffing’ their wine glasses before take a sip. How does that enhance the experience? We don’t sniff our food before eating!  :)

3. There’s RED wine and there’s WHITE wine. I never knew the difference! To me – it is just WINE!

4. Wine comes from grapes. And I think people still do their traditional dance on the grapes to extract the wine.

So armed with such a *rich* experience, I went for the dinner. You can imagine there was really quite a bit of apprehension as I stepped in!

Dinner was at Jing, at 1 Fullerton. It is a beautiful place, overlooking the Singapore River. Now…this was something I was looking forward to!

The FOOD. The 10-course meal was glorious! Really. Look at the fish…

(So sorry, no other pictures of food. We loved it so much, and were sooo hungry, it was gone before we could take any pictures!)

Now the WINE and the winemakers.

The Winemakers were assigned White Covered seats that were distributed all around the room. As luck would have it, the seat next to mine was a Winemaker’s seat! And with each Course, the winemakers would change seats among themselves! As they moved around, they would bring along their wine (some up to 4 bottles) for us to try! It was kind of like musical chairs! You know speed dating – it’s exactly the same formula!

When we started, I felt like a hypocrite! These highly honoured men (& some women) would be able to see right through me! Alas! Should I go along with the pretence?

Hmm… I am proud to say Truth prevails and the truth will set you free. I simply put aside my prejudices, and positioned myself as an ignoramus. I asked genuine questions that I was interested in, and had a really good time!

Q1: Do you own a vineyard too?

A: Not necessarily. Winemakers own wineries or work in wineries. Some wineries buy grapes from vineyards, some have family members who own vineyards, and some have their own vineyards.

Wineries which don’t have vineyards have the option of picking and choosing the best grapes, and deciding on the quantity of wine they want. On the other hand, with a vineyard, the wineries have to contend with bad harvest and create various grades of wine accordingly.

Q2: Do your children drink wine?

A: YES! It was resounding! In fact, in Italy, one of the winemakers pour wine on good ol’ Italian bread, and sprinkle sugar over it as afternoon snack for his kids! This is a common dish served at mid-day! They believe the wine gives EXTRA energy for kids to pull through the second half of the day!

Q3: What’s your personal favourite?

A: This was the best question I asked! Cos if I didn’t, they would get you to try all the wine that their winery produces!

Q4: Is this your first time in Singapore?

Q5: What’s your favourite food here?

Q6: Have you tried the durian?

You would notice the subsequent questions are all small talk with the winemakers. Haha!

After all that drinking, feasting, talking and merry making, this is our table.

That large glass of red wine is a combination of many many many glasses of wine that we couldn’t finish! They call it the tipping glass—you tip the wine that you don’t want into that glass! It was comforting to know that even the experts don’t finish their wine!

Now, for my personal favourite! If I have to bring wine to a dinner, this is what I’d bring. It’s refreshing, light and cleans your palate. (quote and unquote from the Winemaker himself!) And trust me, it really does! I like it!

Maybe this choice also reflects my aptitude for wine appreciation… it is the cheapest wine presented that night! Costs only $28.80 a bottle! But it wins hands down for me!

Free Singapore F1 Grand Prix Tickets

This year, My wife and I had the opportunity to get free tickets for the Singapore F1 Grand Prix.

The Singapore F1 Grand Prix started in 2008, and it was one of the first night races in the whole campaign.

Working within the Marina Area, we were excited about watching the event, as we drove past the venue everyday.

Our Tickets were at Grandstand Turn 1 and we were located at the 1st turn immediately after the flag off.

This is supposed to be an exciting turn as, this is where all the F1 Rally cars will jostle for pole position after the flag off.

I am not much of a F1 fan, but I was there and ready to soak up the atmosphere.

This is definitely not a place to bring your kids, as even with my ear plugs, I could not talk to my wife. The engines sounds were louder than the sounds in a disco.

To salvage the situation, I spent most of my time texting her or taking photos.

What was the most exciting part of the race?

Call us sadistic, but we were all very excited when there was a F1 rally car that crashed near us. In fact, all of us were up on our seats!

At the end of the day, Lewis Hamilton won the race.

Although it was a bit of an anti-social event, as we just sat there without much conversation….the trip to the F1 Grand Prix is definitely an enriching experience.

The shops at the F1 Grand Prix village was also crowded, with tons of people grabbing souvenirs. Looks like the Singapore Tourism Board is scoring in this area.

Mark-ups on items were also ridiculously high, but the people seemed willing to spend….so much for the recession!

Parenting Tips:

Don’t Bring your Kids to the F1 Grandprix, unless you have some major ear plugs. They will also probably be really bored, as the kids won’t be able to interact with the cars or their parents.

The F1 Grand Prix is also not a good event to propose to your girlfriend. She probably won’t be able to hear you, and the engine sounds will really “stuff” up the video recording.

New Milestone – Our New House

Today is an important day for us, as we are now official owners of our new place! Enclosed is a picture of the car park.

It’s a 2 bedroom unit and only 940sqft. We are currently still staying at our rented place, as the apartment has a tenant, and we will only shift in by Dec.

This is a milestone for us as a family, and hopefully we will do well with this investment!

We don’t know how things will work out but we are just going to trust God and take one step at a time!

My famous Grandfather – Lee Dai Soh

In May 2007, I watched a play by a local drama company (Toy Factory) called “Big Fool Lee”. I was pleasantly surprised by the impact that my grandfather had on the local population and the role he played in early Singapore.

The programme on the local production reads:

“He built a stage 'on air'.
He used his voice as strength.
He captured the hearts of many with ethnic stories.
He lit up the lights of knowledge.
He was a true culture not only to Singaporeans but also beyond.
He is Big Fool Lee!”

I never really knew my grandfather, as he had two wives, and he was too traditional to really “hang out” with his grandchildren.

But I remember turning on the Radio (Rediffusion) and hearing his program.

He told stories about the “Monkey God” and other Chinese traditional folk stories….(Frankly, most of the time, I did not really understand the program, as it was in Cantonese)…but his voice was mesmerizing even for a 5 yr old boy.

My mum who is his daughter, tells me that when he used to tell his stories in Chinatown, many would charge for his stories.

With his animated gestures, you will get to hear him tell his stories for the duration of a joss stick. When the joss stick stopped burning…that was how much your payment was worth.

According to my research from the National Library Achieves (Not bad right…they actually recorded him as a national icon), he was born Lee Dai Sor (b. 1913 - d. 22 March 1989, Singapore), or Lee Dai Soh, or Li Da Sha

He was a renowned Cantonese storyteller and especially popular among radio listeners in the 1950s and '60s.

Early Life
Lee was born Lee Fook Hung in Telok Blangah. In his first month, he was struck by a strange illness and lost his voice. Thinking that he was dying, his mother abandoned him at a rubbish dump, but he was discovered and returned by a beggar. Subsequently he recovered from the illness and regained his voice.

Accomplishments
His career as a storyteller started in 1938 when he joined RTM and hosted a Cantonese programme,

Lee's career expanded when Rediffusion started in Singapore in 1949. This provided him an additional platform for his storytelling. His storytelling struck a chord among the radio listeners and he became a household name among the listeners during the 1950s and '60s.

At the height of his career, in 1963, he was hosting up to 20 programmes weekly for Rediffusion as well as for local and Malaysian radio stations. In the early '60s, he was also invited to star in Hong Kong movies but he declined due to his busy schedule. However, he did oblige with guest appearances in a handful of movies.

The launch of the Speak Mandarin Campaign in 1979 marked the end of Lee's broadcasting career, as the local radio stations and Rediffusion were made to cease all dialect programmes by the end of 1982 (Actually, i vaguely remember these posters…with a dress and bell bottoms like that…I don’t think I can actually forget!).

He went on to produce more albums and by end of 1983, he had 12 albums, and the last album consisting eight volumes. Rediffusion ceased its dialect programmes on 30 December 1982 and Lee left the broadcasting scene. However, his storytelling continued through performances at community centres and clan associations. Lee passed away on 22 March 1989 at the age of 76.

Frankly, I did not really get to know my grandfather. In fact, I found out more about my family through the drama, as the researches dug out more thing about my family than I knew.

But my grandpa’s name seems to work wonders whenever I visit the elderly.

I tell them that I am his grandson, and you can see the smile on their faces…

But that is also where the embarrassing part begins…When they start conversing to me in Cantonese, and to their astonishment, they realize that I can hardly muster a reply in my broken Cantonese.

You can’t swim at Pasir Ris Beach in Singapore!

I read something really gross in the local newspapers yesterday…

But it seems that the waters at Pasir Ris beach are too dirty to swim in!

Levels of a bacteria found in human faeces present in the sea there still exceed World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, a year-long National Environment Agency study has found.

It said that though water quality has improved marginally, swimming and activies such as water-skiing are still discouraged along the 3.3-km stretch of beach from the Singapore People's Association's Pasir Ris Holiday Complex to the Civil Service Aloha resort.

Doesn’t that make you feel uncomfortable…considering that many of us, have been to Pasir Ris for a BBQ before…

Maybe u have dipped your feet into the waters there…

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Tuesday that an ageing sewage network was partly to blame for the poor water quality: Faeces is leaking into the waters off Pasir Ris beach from a 23-km network of pipes in the Tampines, Changi and Pasir Ris areas.

The discharge from 39 sewage treatment plants in areas such as Tampines and Changi is also to blame, it said.

Oh no….It seems like Singaporeans who stay in these areas have been contributing to the dirt on the beach :) Haha

On a lighter note, it is nice to know that dirty beaches are a thing of the past…

Maybe one day…our beaches will like those found in Hawaii…

But in the meantime, we will still need to wait for NEA to keep on cleaning up our beaches.

U might also want to know that the other beaches in Singapore - Sentosa and Seletar Islands, Sembawang Park, Changi and East Coast beach - are suitable for swimming and other water sports.

Parenting Advice:

Looks like there one less beach for us families to bring our children to swim in. Thank God, East Coast Beach is still safe!

Getting a Maid (Part 2)

The road to the maid agency was one that was filled with anxiety and prayer.

Some people ask if the agency you go to really makes a difference?

I think they are all the same, as no agency can guarantee a person’s character.

No agency can also guarantee Class A candidates, as it functions like any other job agency – No one can control who walks through the door!

Coming back to our situation: We went to an agency in Bukit Timah, as my Mum knew the boss! This is definitely a good advantage to have in these trying circumstances!

Armed with arrival information about fresh candidates, we went to the agency as soon as the boss came back from Philippines (We only look at Bio-Data as this point of time, as the candidates are not in Singapore yet).

We told ourselves that we wanted to get the first look at the new maids that were coming in.

Going through the pictures, we were looking for a girl that BOTH of us could agree on.

The first person that got our unanimous decision was this 28 yo old called Ranaliz.

She looked bright and cheery and after getting her resume, we headed over to the viewing station...

It was here that we got to watch a recording of her interview process in the Philippines. With the wonders of modern technology, we were going to see her in action, and get a better understanding of our potential helper.

We played the Video...After a few minutes….IT was settled!

We decided that she was going to be the ONE!

Ranaliz has got 3 children as well, and she works for a Scottish Boss back in the Philippines. She speaks excellent English and has an excellent disposition.

After choosing her, we had to select 2 other back-up candidates as well, just in case there were any “hiccups". We did this selection without our full focus...as we were wondering...

What could possibly go WRONG!

Unfortunately, something did go WRONG! – we received NEWS the next day that Ranaliz had contracted Hepatitis B, and therefore ineligible to come to Singapore.

Disappointment filled our hearts….

We had to take our PLAN B!

Well, the next candidate is this girl called Jingle…& I was pretty unsure about her.

In fact, we both had to go back to the agency to watch Jingle's video again...

We looked through all the candidates... and finally…we decided on Jingle!

We don't know what lies ahead for us but we are anticipating her arrival in a month’s time!

She may not be our PLAN A, but we are believing and hoping that Plan B turns our much better than our Plan A.

How to prevent Mobile Theft?

In the recent issue of Digital Times (Straits Times Digital Supplement), they featured some local Entrepreneurs who made it BIG!

One of them started this company called Bak2U.

What makes this company intriguing to me, is that they have produced this anti-theft software for your handphone.

(For those readers, who are always losing your handphones, this software might greatly interest you)

How does this software work?

Users just need to download a software into your hp, and upon setting up, you will be asked to key in the phone number of a loved one.

• When you lose your hp, and the potential thief decides to keep the phone, he/she will need to insert in his own SIM card to use the phone.
• The moment a foreign SIM card is inserted into the HP, a notification with the thief’s IMEI no and HP no, will be sent to your loved one.
• Your loved one can follow-up on these details, by alerting the police or confronting the thief himself/herself.

I think the program is really cool, especially when one has a habit of regularly losing his/her phone.

At press time, I have not tried the program yet, but as it is recommended by The Straits Times – I think it comes from a highly reliable source.

Kid’s Praise

One of the 1st seeds planted into my life was sown by a Blue Bible called Psalty!

When I was in Upper Primary, my brother brought home one of these records and started playing it on the stereo.

I was intrigued!

The “catchy” storylines and light warm hearted music really drew me towards the gospel, and this “brush” with the gospel made a lasting impression in my life.

As a father, I have brought the same series home for the children, and they love the music as well!

Although they don’t make any new additions to the Kids Praise series - you can still buy the CDs off Amazon, and I am pretty sure that you will love the “catchy” tunes too!

Currently, the kids are listening to the City Harvest church album and they seem to be thoroughly enjoying the songs.

Fun activities for the Family

One of our favourite family activities is cycling at East Coast Park.

Despite our busy schedules, we always make time off for the kids – and the kids just love being chauffeured around East Coast Park.

Daddy loves it as well, as it is good exercise, and I find it a great time to bond with the kids – as I just keep on talking to them, as I give a running commentary about the scenery around me!

This time round – Weng came along with us, so we had 1 kid in 1 bicycle.

Nathan loves it, and he kept on urging Auntie Weng to Go..Go..Go!

We cycled to Bedok Jetty and where Nicole saw fishermen catching fishes!

Miss Nicole made some interesting observations:

Nicole: Mummy, what are they doing?

Mummy: They’re fishing. They catch the fish, bring it home, cook and eat it!

Nicole: But they can buy fish from the supermarket!

After a short pause…

Nicole: Mummy, are they fishing because they have no money?

Anyway, it was a great workout for the family, and the kids really enjoyed themselves!

Being a weekday as well – the park was relatively quiet, and this made things easier for novice cyclists like ourselves!

Michael Jackson’s Ghost spotted at Neverland!

Last week, we experienced the tragic passing of a Pop Icon Michael Jackson.

I have been singing and watching his videos as a teen, and I even went to his sell-out concert at the National Stadium. I remember going there at 4pm for seats when the show started at only 8pm.

I remember watching his “Beat it” and “Billie Jean” videos over and over again on MTV…What a phenomenal dancer and talent!

However, controversy seems to surround him even in his death, as there is a rumour his ghost was being spotted at his Neverland Ranch.

When a friend pointed out the video to me…I was going like “Get out of here!”….If u have not seen the video…Check it out here…

Birthday Month Roundup

The month of June was a very eventful month for the Tay Family.

This was because Mummy’s Birthday was on the 18th of June, and Daddy and Nicole’s Birthday was on the 19th of June!

We were very blessed by all your presents and we really want to appreciate everyone out there, for making it such a great month for all of us!

We enjoyed all the birthday celebrations and also the numerous SMSes that we received on our SPECIAL DAY!

Thanks for all your support and for also making our 1st Decentralized services on Sunday such a successful event!

It was truly an invaluable experience!

Kenko Fish Spa

During our Birthdays, we went to the Kenko Fish Spa at the Singapore Flyer. (Thanks to N149 and Jenny!)

We heard so much about it, that we wanted to try the fish spa for ourselves!

Before going in, we had to wash our legs first (Maybe they thought that the algae on our feet would kill the fish or something :P)

We also had to put a plaster on all our open wounds, so that the fish will not have a go at it!

After that…we rolled up our jeans…and we let mother nature have a nibble on our toes!

Check out my leg hair….my wife says it’s gross!

But…of course, i think i will have the last laugh…the fishes go after dead skin….so check out which leg has got more fishes!

I call it…Like bees to honey!!! :P

Well, the health benefit of the whole exercise is that the fish are supposed to eat your dead skin…and leave your legs with softer healthier looking skin!

Btw, our legs did feel smoother after that!

Nicole is turning FOUR on 19 June!

The first thing that crossed my mind was the PARTY. How should we do it? Where should it be? And most important….how much are we going to spend??

With three kids, I learnt from other mummies that it would be really quite a challenge to do BIG celebrations for EACH kid EVERY year!

Well, in 2009, Nathan had his big-scale party, so Nicole would have to contend with having a simple party in school!

What I didn’t know was planning for this *small-scale* party is a MOE approved module in Parenting 101!

Nicole: YEAH! I like a purple party!

Mummy: Let’s go and buy the purple party things today. And we have to buy the purple invitation cards. Yeah!

Nicole: I don’t like purple.

Mummy: But… You said you liked purple.

Nicole: NOOOOOOO…. I don’t like purple!

Mummy: What food would you want to have at your party?

Nicole: McDonald’s!

Mummy: Sorry Darling, Mummy has ordered food for the party. We have McDonald’s for your party next year ok?

Nicole: Yeah! Next Year! Yeah!

Mummy: Shall we order McDonald’s for your party this year?

Nicole: NOOO! Everyone has McDonald’s. So boring. I don’t want McDonald’s.

Mummy: ?!??! So what do you want then?

Nicole: Let’s serve sandwiches and potato chips.

Mummy: (to herself) Wah! so atas!

Mummy: I’ll order three different kids of sandwiches ok?

Nicole: NOOO! I want McDonald’s.

Mummy: AHHHHHH!!!

Sigh… so I stopped talking about the party, (just in case the little missy changes her mind again), cracked my head to think how to execute a Traffic Light Party. Check out what we have thus far:

The boy who shares

Last night, I learnt what sacrifice meant. It was a lesson I'll never forget!

I was driving home from Expo with Nathan besides me. Before I left the car park, I opened a small packet of Hello Panda for him to snack on. If you recall, this was one of Nicole's favorite food, and now it's Nathan's too!

Well, I decided that we should share that little packet of Hello Panda (I mean, who can resist this? haha...) So when he dug his little chubby fingers into the packet and came up with the first piece, I stretched out my hand and ask, "Can Mummy have one please?"

It was easy. He automatically gave me that piece.

As an aside, Nathan has always displayed a very giving heart in all things. He shares his toys, his food and never thinks twice before giving.

Well, so we kinda did an alternate one piece for me, one piece for you from then on. Then came the LAST PIECE. I was driving, so with my eyes on the road, he suddenly proclaimed, "No More!"

I realised there's just one last piece left in his hand. Then this mummy wanted to test his little boy's heart, so I said, "Can Mummy have this please?"

"Nonononono" (giggle giggle)

And when he attempted to put it in his mouth, I opened my mouth and went "Ahhhrrrmmm".

"Nonononono" (giggle giggle)

I tried stretching out one hand, and he turned the empty packet into my hands and said "no more no more" (giggle giggle)

It was quite funny. I knew he wanted this last piece, and here I was making it difficult for him to eat it with all my distractions and requests.

After a while, I got tired. So I stopped, and started asking him about what he learnt in Playgroup. I forgot all about that last piece.

Just before I exited at Bedok Road, I felt a hand tap my elbow. I took a quick glance. It was Nathan giving that last piece of Hello Panda to me! He put it into my hand and said "here memek" (ya, he calls me that!)

Imagine how I felt! I was sooooo touched! With tears in my eyes literally, I put it back in his hand. I poured out my thank yous and i love yous.

He popped it into his mouth (who wouldn't? Just in case mummy changes her mind!) And very quickly exclaimed, "hmmmm... nice!"

How not to love this boy who shares?
