Ps. Kong Hee is in the News

I think that it’s great that Pastor Kong Hee is so high tech, and always trying out new things!

Since he got onto Twitter and Facebook, we have seen him communicating with the congregation via this medium as well.

It was just featured in The Straits Times.

Check out the article below:

Tweet! It's your pastor

A few churches are using Twitter and Facebook to connect with their flocks

WHEN City Harvest Church member Vanessa Sng needed spiritual advice, she did not just pray - she tweeted.

Moments later, there it was: 'It is the work of God!' tweeted back her pastor Kong Hee. Like most young Singaporeans today, the 20-year-old student uses Twitter, a micro-blogging service that sends short messages, or 'tweets', to other users online.

Followers tend to be friends and family, but these days, churches are taking to tweeting too.

The phenomenon has gained momentum especially in the United States, where during 'Twitter Sundays', congregation members are asked to tweet questions about the sermon for discussion afterwards.

But the online service is still in its infancy among churches here. A check on Twitter's website found four with active accounts, set up as recently as two months ago. The churches - City Harvest Church, New Creation Church, Heart of God Church and Hope Church Singapore - use it to share short biblical quotations and activity listings once or twice a week.

And the online gospel is going further. A search on social networking site Facebook, which first introduced its popular 'wall', 'poke' and 'tag' features in 2004, turned up 67 profiles of Christian churches here. About a third were set up only this year.

The number of people following the churches' Facebook and Twitter profiles online were a fraction of its real-life followers.

City Harvest Church, with 25,000 members, had 4,469 friends on Facebook and 1,359 followers on Twitter yesterday. Most were under 30 years old.

Pastor Seow How San of Heart of God Church in Eunos said Twitter enabled him to be a better caregiver to his congregation. Since the church began tweeting in May, nearly 800 of its 1,400 believers have signed up to listen - and tweet back.

'It was a conscious effort to get people to use it,' he said. 'As pastor, I need to know how people are feeling. Now I know how they feel, how they think, even what they do, eat and drink. Having Twitter really helps if you have a big church.'

Your View on Masturbation?!?

If you are looking for a Christian discussion on Masturbation…Yes..I said Masturbation!

Then, check out Ps. Kong Hee’s blog, as he discusses the topic!

It amazes me how Pastor is not afraid to discuss controversial topics like Masturbation, and yet write boldly about it on the Internet! (Strong Admiration for the mind of God :P)

It has really educated me about the topic as well…as I discovered that the bible has been inconclusive about the actual act, and Pastor’s deliberate attempt to end the post abruptly shows us that:

choices

He wants us to decide for ourselves, and that there are dangers about the act!

Sun Ho has a BLOG!

As I was surfing the Sun Ho’s Facebook fanpage today, i chanced upon her blog!

sun blog

Just type http://sun-ho.com to see her brand new blog page!

Sun was back late last year, and I was just wondering what she has been up to!

Recently, I read Sandra’s blog and I realized that there is this really ugly rumour going around round that Ps Kong Hee and Sun Ho are getting a divorce!

I happen to know them personally, and I will like to say that these rumours are totally unfounded!

Ps. Kong is always on the phone with her and he is always flying over to America to spend time with Sun and Dayan. Personally, I think they are really loving and a really great couple!

I think it must be someone’s idea of a really sick joke to start a false rumour like this!

Anyway, i think this vblog is really cool, and I don’t mind trying the creme bule in New York!

It looks really “Yummey-licious!”

Christians & Tattoos?

truth tattoo

Can Christians have Tattoos?

Check out Ps. Kong’s timely exposition on this topic in his blog.

I think it is a very balanced approach to the subject, and it gives us the “extra edge” when we need to handle questions surrounding this topic.

Prayer in City Harvest Church

This week, we are back at having our morning and evening prayer meetings, at various venues around the island.

It was good to wake up early in the morning again…though it was quite a struggle :)

It was also good to see some of my friends like Stanley and June there as well!

We prayed for Easter as it is next week. The church will be putting up a production, which is set in the future…I will definitely be inviting my parents and friends for it!

cityharvesteaster

We prayed for Sun as well. She has just been discharged from the hospital, but she is still a bit weak and recovering at home. Check out the latest updates at Ps. Kong Hee’s Blog!

Hopefully, she will get well really soon!

Ps. Kong Hee has a Blog!

One of the blogs that I always look forward to, is Ps. Kong Hee’s!

That’s right! Our very own Ps. Kong has started a blog and you can find it here!

I think Ps. always amazes me in that, he is always willing to try out “New things!”

In the last month, he was one of the 1st ministers I know that is on Twitter!

Next, he was on Facebook…

konghee

And now, we get to read his weekly blog entries on the Internet!

City Harvest Church - Cultural Mandate

Asia Conference finished formally for us on Monday with a meet-the-pastors sessions at Jurong West. Currently, the whole family is recovering from the late nights and we have been trying to get our body clock back in sync.

I felt the conference was a real breakthrough for us, as it solidifies the cultural mandate message for us.

konghee

Ps. Kong Hee kicked off the series with the 3 "Spaces".

The 1st Space  - The Church

The 2nd Space - The World

The 3rd  Space -  A place for society's elite in the world e.g. Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Steven Spielberg, David Beckham

We were reminded once again about how as a church, we love to isolate ourselves and stay within our 1st space. Although we were in the world, we are afraid to engage the world.

ARBernard

Dr. AR Bernard added to the sermon by speaking about:

John 17:13-16

13But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.

14I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

15I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.

16They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

Through his messages, he reminded us that God did not say that he will take us out of the world, but instead we should 'insulate' ourselves from the world.

"Insulation" comes from our Spiritual Disciplines (Prayer, Fasting, Studying the Bible, etc...) and we should not be afraid of culture. In fact, Culture or Society (the world) is one of the greatest competitors for Christianity, as it creates mind-sets and attitudes against Christianity.

The crux of the whole conference is that we should redeem culture and transform it for the glory of God.

Isolation is not the key, but insulation through the Word of God, and Penetration comes as we engage the world!

I think this message really embodies the message for us as a church!

That's why we are not afraid of loud music, colorful lights, hip-hop fashion and technology.

Let's keep on walking with the grace of God, as we INSULATE ourselves and engage culture!

Family Time - An antidote for Divorce

On a recent trip to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), something really struck me.

It was early in the morning, and I was having breakfast with some friends in a cafe. Looking across me, I noticed a family having their breakfast there as well.

31082008637

They were having their Sunday Family Ritual - Breakfast with their morning papers and a DVD playing their child's favorite cartoon (So that she will be distracted).

Throughout the whole meal, not a single word was uttered, but they seemed to be in a little world of their own.

It struck me that - Quality time is very different for every family.

I tend to believe, that just being together is not enough, but intelligent, engaging conversation is needed. Spending time with my kids, means playing hide-and-seek or just bringing them somewhere new.

Whenever, I have the privilege to drive my boss (Ps Kong Hee), I am always amazed by his work ethic. He is always on the move and planning something new. Yet, despite his busyness, he always  finds time to call his wife SUN on the phone.

After preaching in Singapore every weekend, he is on the next plane out and off to spend time with his wife and children.

If a successful minister does not forego family time, how much more so for someone like me.

Before I go, If u like Korean Dramas, u will like this commercial. A bit long, but very touching.

City Harvest Sermon - Ps. Kong Hee Preaches

Last weekend, it was great to have Ps. back from the Europe Conference and he preached a sermon about Servanthood.

This is one of the main themes for CHC in 2008, and all of us are looking to grow in this area in the coming months.

The theme also tied in nicely with our early morning prayer. For these 2 weeks, the church is waking up early to pray from 7am - 8am at Jurong West and at Heart of God church in Paya Lebar.

Today is day 3 and I am tired....

prayer

I was telling my mass class that to be at Paya Lebar at 7am, I have to wake up at 6am. - I have not woken up at 6am since Secondary School - talk about crucifying my flesh.

But the prayer meetings have been good!!!

And I am looking forward to the next one tomorrow, as I know that keeping myself disciplined is one of the keys to success!

Furthermore, according to the Sermon on Sunday:

  1. Servanthood is Willing (Serving is an issue of the heart where surrender is needed)
  2. Servanthood excels
  3. Servanthood is swift
  4. Servanthood is never convenient
  5. Servanthood is honoring
  6. Servanthood is work
  7. Servanthood is caring for people (Hey! Even Barak Obama practices this) .

INCONVENIENCE (Point 4) is something we are discovering this week!

I am so glad that so many people are coming to the prayer meetings, that we have been having a packed hall in both Paya Lebar and Jurong. (Approximately. 4000 people have been gathering to pray)

Yesterday, we introduced another pray center at Church of Singapore in Marine Parade.

If you are thinking about joining us, come down this week! You won't be alone and best of all - YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Ps. Kong Hee preaches about Servanthood

This week, Ps. Kong continued preaching about servanthhood

2 points that really impacted me today:

1. Servants look into details
Luke 16:10-12
10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man's, who will give you what is your own?

Many people don't pay attention to details. They find it 'too micro', and their excuse is that "I am Big Picture person!"

However, I realised that in life, successful leaders are those that look into the details.
Even Top CEOS who look at the 'Big Picture', have secretaries who look into the workings of every policy - highlighting the importance of details!

Many people rubbish details, and declare details as too time consuming. But top leaders consistenly look into DETAILS!

I believe that this is why the Bible coins the term "faithful in what is least, is faithful also in much."

In fact:
Excellence is the attention given to details that leads to superior performance

2nd thing that really impacted me is this: Servanthood is about relationships

- It's about how we serve one another.

Many people don't want to serve their leaders, CG members and friends because they feel that they are better, more senior and more knowlegeable.

But if Jesus the perfect Son of God can serve us (Imperfect people), how much more do we need to serve!

A famous Person said:

You can tell whether you are becoming a servant, by how u act when people treat you like one!

Many times, we get agitated when people step on our toes and irritated when they don't seem to take into account our previous 'works'.

But isn't that precisely what a slave is like?

A slave is a person who has no rights, but just willing to serve his master.

Mark 10:44-45
44And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Hey! We got to be better servants!

Monday, March 3, 2008

Ps. Kong Hee - Servanthood

Ps. Kong Hee preached a great sermon about servanthood last weekend.

Having a servant's heart enabled Daniel to serve in the courts of his colonial masters.

Dan 1:4
4young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans.

Just having the right attitude does not mean that life will be 'smooth sailing'. Joseph faced tough times after receiving a dream from God. But his servant's heart enabled him to find promotion. We must realize that our attitude through tough situations, will bring about the breakthroughs we desire.

I liked the new perspectives that Ps. gave about Rebekah best!

Abraham's servant went with 10 camels in search for a wife for his master's son. He went to a well, and asked Rebekah for a drink of water.

Rebekah did not know about the servant's mission but demonstrated the attitude of servanthood.

She gave the servant a drink and drew water for the 10 camels as well.

This is quite extraordinary when u consider how much a camel drinks!

1 camel drinks 106 liters of water. That means 106 giant 'Evian' Bottles.

The size of the task is even bigger if u take into account another secondary factor. Many people think that the well we are talking about is those where we just throw a bucket in, and pull out the water.
In those days, the wells had steps. So, in order to draw the water, she had to go up and down, a total of at least 30 steps, and do it for at least 53 times (assuming her bucket can hold 20 liters), as she had to feed 10 camels!

Man! She must be 1 tough California Gym Cookie! (But definitely not ugly, as according to the Bible she was very beautiful)
What's more, in Gen 24:61, we see that Rebekah did not come from a poor family as well.

61Then Rebekah and her maids arose, and they rode on the camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and departed.

Hey! the girl had maids! And yet she was willing to serve!

Can u imagine this? A youth who comes from a middle income family, willing to serve a perfect stranger, and willing to serve the 10 camels as well. Talk about going the extra mile!

It was though her servant's attitude that not only was Rebekah blessed, her family was blessed as well.

Gen 24:22
22So it was, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden nose ring weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels of gold,

Gen 24:53
53Then the servant brought out jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.

It is just like the Holy Spirit today. He is waiting at the well of life. Looking for somebody who is willing to serve him.

Someone who has a great attitude, and willing to go the extra mile!
And when we serve him, not only will we blessed, but our families as well.

Wow! what an inspiring sermon! Lets go all the way with God in 2008!

City Harvest Church - Ps Kong Hee

Ps Kong preached a great sermon today about having Confidence in God.

This identity issue is a very important issue, and one where we need to have a Revelation. In fact, it is so important, that Jesus faced this issue, before He was officially launched out into His ministry. His confidence in God was tested as he faced the devil in Matt 4.

When tested, the devil quoted Scripture. Jesus therefore had to be confident in God, and in the modus operandi (the way to do things) that God had given to Him.
He could do things God's way or the devil's way.

It is just like what the Bible says, about seed sown on stony places. In Matt 13:20-21 it says:

20But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

If we want to face this world and become overcomers, we got to be "rooted in ourselves". We definitely got to be 'rooted' in God, and be confident about our identity in God.

As we go into 2008, let's be comfortable about the values we uphold:

We have the:

  • Great Commandment - where we put God first
  • Great Commission - where we go out and make disciples of all men
  • Culture Mandate - where we stay relevant to society and continue to be the light

We can't please everyone, but we got to stay true to what we need to achieve in our generation. Just like the example given to us by Jesus. He was so 'different' from the people of that time, that even John the Baptist asked whether He was the Messiah (Matt 11:3).

Jesus reply was to look at the fruits!

Although Jesus hung out prostitutes and ate with tax collectors, the miracles and the fruits of God followed Him.

With that John was convinced about the ministry of Jesus.

In Matt 11:18-19, Jesus goes on to say:

18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children."

In other words, let's not be focused on the outward appearances, but lets examine the fruits of the ministry.

By that wisdom is justified!

Before i go, let me leave u with a video of a women that I greatly admire!

Christmas Services at CIty Harvest Church

With services starting since last Saturday, it has been a long tiring Xmas.

But...it has all been worth it! the people just kept on 'flooding' in for the services... we are believing that more than 50,000 people will attend our Xmas services this week.

We are now believing for them to come back this weekend, so that we can see them become lasting fruits in the kingdom of God!

Being in the carnvial committee, my week started since last Friday. That was the day, that the carnival games shifted into the Hall.

The inflatables were a real challenge, as they came in very DIRTY.

A BIG THANK YOU to people like: Suting, Delphine, Shing, Sandy, Aaron, Clement, Joel. Choon Peng, Gail...and all the rest who helped out with cleaning the inflatables.

They got down on their knees and 'scrubbed' the inflatables with 'Dettol', so that it would be clean for the children! Many THANKS!

The best thing about Xmas, was of course seeing our friends and family members come for the weekend services, and respond to the altar call. My mum, brother and sis-in-law come and they all enjoyed the Xmas drama. Mum lifted up her hands when the altar call was given. PTL!

During the carnival, it was also really exciting to see ET ZONE dominate the 'Eating Competition'. We were the Unofficial Overall Champions, with us winning the eating competiton on all 4 days!

Cheer:
ET..Hey! ET..Ho! ET..Yea! ET..YA *11 claps*..ET!

To join in the Xmas Celebration, Nathan also competed in the 'Sunshine Baby' competiton. Unfortunately, he was a bit tired and cranky...Cried when he saw the judges! (Even when the Judge was Aunty Shirley-he sees her everyday!)

It's ok Nath! We'll win the next time! You are still my little 'SUNSHINE!'

Anyway, we are now looking forward to the weekend CGs, where we will see our friends come back!

GROWTH AND REVIVAL IS COMING!!!

Ps Kong Hee - Great Sermon

The Sermon today was really very good!

Pastor preached about Zacharias and Elizabeth, who are the parents of John the Baptist.

Luke 1:5-7
5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

The Bible tells us that Zacharias and Elizabeth were both righteous and blameless before God. However, Elizabeth was barren.

In today's context, it would mean that they are great Christians who prayed, tithed and served God fervently.

Interesting thing about them, was that when their breakthrough came, they were Not Ready to receive it! God was going to give them a great Xmas Present, but they said NO!

They were so used to barrenness, that they were indifferent to change. In fact, God had to shut Zacharias up, as he was saying the wrong things! His old lifestyle of barrenness, was hindering his faith in God.

Death and life lies in the power of the tongue, and our man Zacharias was saying the wrong things!

A contemporary example : U may look the part by dressing well and looking sharp, but if your speech does not match up to it, you would hinder your promotion and your level of influence automatically diminishes.

I believe that this is precisely why we need to be people who are full of faith, and yet well read at the same time. If not, we will not become 'pillars of influence' in the society we live in!

The old lifestyle of barrenness - Tradition
The breakthrough - Transition
The fruitfulness - Transformation

No one likes change, but every time, if we want a revival, it means CHANGE!

BTW, it's... 5 more days... to our Xmas Services....

Let's keep on praying... for 50,000!

Knowing Who u are?

Recently, I have been listening to a Podcast by Dr. A.R Bernard entitled Cycles of Temptation. U can check it out at http://www.clc.org/

Describing the 3 temptations of Christ, he highlighted the importance of the devil's first question to Jesus.

Luke 4:3
And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."

The 1st question posed to Jesus, was a question about his identity. It challenged Jesus on who he believed he was. This is an important detail, as how u live your life, is determined by who u believe u are.

Jesus believed and knew that He is the Son of God, and it shaped how He lived His life.

If your identity is shaped by your company, by your postion and ranking, you will find your life being poured into the company. If your life and identity is shaped by your friends, you will find out that negative+positive comments made by them, have a significant impact on your actions.

Kinda remembered when I was younger. When my life and actions were determined by fashion and clubbing. Clothes and the things of this world just can't occupy what needs to be filled inside!

Btw, Pst Kong is on Benny Hinn's- "This is your Day!" television program. It is the most widely watched Christian program in America, and on the Wed, Nov 7 broadcast, he tells the CHC story! That's really Cool!!! http://www.bennyhinn.org/

Rev. Kong Hee - Arise n Build Weekend

A New Milestone

Today was Our Building Fund Weekend, where we "Arise and Build", to build God a new house.

Taxi drivers- Told my members the other day, that when we were at Jurong, it was interesting that when I took a taxi to Jurong West St 91, the taxi drivers' comments would range passionately from, "this church is very nice" to " this church has a lot of Millionaires!"

Now when I tell them to go to Expo, they will just simply say that "This church has a lot of people!"

This milestone is important to us. In our personal walk, spiritual habits like tithing and joining a ministry, represent our progressive milestones. Our sacrifices during this time represents our milestones as a church! We have got to move on!

Ps. Kong preached appropriately, - "It's not just building a building, but it's about building lives!"

As we give to a greater cause, we are building greater opportunities for the Kingdom of God, greater opportunities for our families and for a new generation to arise.

We are believing that our families will have a great stadium for us to build our lives in!
