MTV Music Awards 2009 - Michael Jackson Tribute with Janet Jackson

The Music Industry has been filled with the outburst of Kanye West at the MTV Music awards, but it was also exciting to hear that Madonna and Janet Jackson did a tribute to Michael Jackson.

I think we all grew up with Michael, and there is always so much news about him. I remember the “buzz” about him, when they spotted his ghost at the mansion!

Despite his humanity, he was a phenomenal dancer, and I remember trying to do the “Moon Walk” when I was young. :)…I failed terribly!

If you can’t get enough of Michael Jackson, check out this MTV tribute, with his sister Janet Jackson making an appearance!

Positive Parenting: Hopefully…

Nathan has been going to Julia Gabriel for the last 6 months, and recently, he just finished his term. We have been deciding on whether we should send the kids to baby school, and we felt that we were going to make this semester his last!

Well, on the last day…besides the shorter lesson…there was a party as well.

Nathan was really brave and decided to become a Tiger!

DSC_0012

The Julia Gabriel Chinese teacher was really good at her artwork…and Daddy thought he looked Really “FIERCE” when I first saw him as well!

DSC_0015

Actually, our little boy is a little bit of a cowardly “lion” and we hope that he will become braver, when he joins Nicole in school in 2009.

Btw, we tried 2 Julia Gabriel centres in Singapore (Evans Road and Forum Galleria) and in terms of facilities – Evans Road is much better, as they have an outdoor playground and water play. But, Forum Galleria has better teachers, and previously, Nathan had this teacher called Gerri! She is really good and very entertaining!

School is really expensive…and hopefully, the exposure will do him good!

We will see the answers in a few years time!

I can’t get a seat!

Parenting and handing newborn babies is always  going to be a difficult and enriching experience.

I have therefore been keeping a lookout for new perspectives on parenting and researching on experiences of potential parents. (Btw, Thanks so much for your continual votes as a Best Parenting Blog, and your support as one of the Best Daddy Bloggers!)

Just the other day, I stumbled onto this advertisement and it is so funny!!!

Considering the amount of problems, Singapore seems to have with rude and ungracious commuters…

Maybe we need a pregnant women like this, to make things happen!

Watch and learn ! :)

Nicole has a Boyfriend…or Boyfriends!

Parents are naturally very over protective of their children.

Just the other day, Nicole told me that she has not 1 but 3 boyfriends!

Daddy naturally wanted to see who they were…

In my mind, I was mentally scanning through her classmates and wondering who they were…

Was it candidate A?

DSC_0538

Was it candidate B?

DSC_0541

Or was it candidate c?

DSC_0534

I wonder if all Fathers are like me: even if the candidate was:

hollywood men

Brad Pitt…Zac Efron…Johnny Depp…Matthew McConaughey…Daddy has his reservations about any guy she brings home…

Pitt – the name sounds pathetic…

Zac – Don’t trust those boys who are in high school…

Depp – Sounds a bit shallow…

McConaughey – too difficult to pronounce…

Yes…I know…All lame excuses… Daddy seems to have reservations about every MAN!!!

In fact, I convinced Nicole to choose only ONE boyfriend…and that boyfriend is…

daddy

I wonder if all parents are so protective over their children :)

Will Nicole and Nadine’s husbands meet Daddy’s stringent criteria?

Parenting 301 – will most probably be learning to let go…Only God can help me!!!

An Educational Place to Visit in Singapore

Just this week, we had a chance to explore some of the warehouses next to Singapore Press Holdings at Toa Payoh.

toa payoh warehouse

My wife was looking for a distributor for children’s products and we stumbled upon Beacon Educational Supplies.

They supply kindergarten and Nursery supplies for many of the Pre-schools in Singapore.

beacon educational

Looks like an ordinary office but inside, we found a treasure trove of educational toys for the kids!

beacon inside

There were lots of study charts…children’s books…

childrens books

childrens washing machine

And even well crafted wooden washing machines and kitchen stoves.

toy stoves

They were made of wood and of good quality. Nathan had fun playing with them and they would definitely be a good investment for schools and people who have lots of children! :)

Best of all, they are the sole agents for these tricycles from Denmark called Winther

winther

These are the same tricycles found in schools such as Chiltern House and Pat’s School house. They are also super durable compared to the China ones that you normally find on the market.

The tyres have a rubber lining and they are known to withstand the toughest of children.

We wanted to buy one for Nathan and Nadine but the cheapest one will cost $350.

Super Ex right!

Well, in the end, we did not get one for ourselves, but this place is definitely an interesting place to visit when u need educational toys!

Here, you will not find any Transformers, Winnie the Pooh or Thomas the Train toys…

Instead, you will find toys that teach you Math, Balancing, Fine Motor and Memory Skills!

This is a place for a discerning parent to visit! :)

Parenting Tip:

Look out for places such as these, in order to get a good price on your toys. When u spend your money at Takashimiya, u might not be getting the best bargain possible.

Food Review: Portuguese Egg Tarts

I have not done a food review for some time…and the last one was on Gunther’s (French Cuisine). So, I decided to dig up the old cook book and “whip'” up another recommendation.

To be honest, I am not a BIG FAN of Egg tarts, but at a family luncheon on the weekend, I was asked to try some.

egg tarts

To my Surprise – They were DELICIOUS!

I immediately asked my nephew where he brought it from, and he said Galicier Confectionary.

Ok…at this point of time…you must be asking…Where on earth is that?!?

My sentiments exactly.

Well, I found out that it was located near Serangoon Interchange. This may be quite accessible to some of my readers.

Upon getting the address of the confectionary, I decided to see the shop for myself.

Situated at Blk 253 (Serangoon Ave 3)…it is not exactly located in the ‘hub’ of the city! (Btw, they have a branch in Tiong Bahru as well…nearer the market)

galicier 2

It is located at a corner of a block, further from Serangoon Interchange. I wasn’t even sure that I found the right shop when I saw it! It looks just like any other bakery in Clementi or Jurong West.

There were no large billboards that mentioned that they were in the newspapers…or any long queues.

However, I noticed a small write-up by the local newspapers near the cashier.

galicier

Well, they are supposed to be quite famous for their donuts as well…but I won’t exactly ‘rave’ about them.

They are just freshly baked…and as a result, they are soft and well sugared.

But a “Must Try” are the Portuguese Tarts.

They are made with fresh eggs, and covered with a crust that has a very “ang moh” tinge to it. In fact, it tastes like flaky pastry from Delifrance.

However, the combination together with the egg custard really makes it a delicious creation!

Another item that you can try on the menu is their “Chicken Pies”.

They are very tasty and Nicole had 2 of them for tea! She was just supposed to eat 1! :)

Do let me know what you think of their tarts and pies, if you happen to have tried them as well!

Children, Pillows and the Bolster

The other night, before I could leave the Children’s room, I was prompted by Nicole to pass her the bolster.

Even though I think that her bolster is really smelly (due to her saliva and sweat), she insists that she likes it just the way it is…unwashed and soiled!

IMG_2982

Have you ever wondered how the bolster came about?

Why do we seem to need this cushion, in between our legs before we sleep?

And interestingly enough, when we watch Hollywood Movies, this pillow seems to be missing from the bedrooms of American and Western homes!

Why ah?!?

According to Wikipedia, A bolster (etymology: Middle English, derived from Old English, is a long narrow pillow or cushion filled with cotton, down, or fibre. In western countries, it is usually placed at the head of bed and functions as head or back support.

In southeast Asian countries, in particular Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, the bolster is designed to be hugged when sleeping. It is called a dakimakura in Japanese. In the Philippines, many call it the "hotdog pillow" (or more natively, "tandayan") following the close resemblance to the food bearing that name. In Chinese, its hanyu pinyin is "bao zhen" (lit. "hugging pillow").

Tradition suggests that a wife would fashion the bolster out of bamboo and give it to her husband when he travelled away from home so that he would not be lonely at night, hence the name "bamboo wife," or "Dutch wife," or chikufujin in Japanese.

In many Chinese and Malay families, children are provided with a bolster and the habit of sleeping with a bolster carries over into adulthood.

IMG_2976

It is said that hugging a bolster will calm one's mind when sleeping, and, in the hot tropical climate of Singapore and Malaysia, it is often too hot to cover oneself with a blanket when sleeping, especially in a non-air-conditioned room, hence hugging a bolster will avoid catching a cold.

In more traditional Chinese families, a newly-wed couple's wedding chamber will most likely have a bed that comes with two pillows and one bolster. It is said that the bolster is to provide the husband with something to hug when the wife is not in the mood or vice versa.

In many other countries, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, a bolster is quite different. They use a bolster the way what some western countries use their body pillows. These are pillows that the sleeper can rest his head on and also hug it with both arms and legs. This is great for children who like the comfort of sleeping with something and the habit extends to adults too.

The use of the bolster is so common among Indonesian people that most local hotels provide bolsters for their guests. However, this is less common in westernized hotels in bigger cities in Indonesia.

So exactly what a bolster is, depends on the country you live in.

I believe that this little article explains, why bolsters play such a significant role in Asian Families! Do you sleep with a bolster?

New Milestone – Our New House

Today is an important day for us, as we are now official owners of our new place! Enclosed is a picture of the car park.

new house

It’s a 2 bedroom unit and only 940sqft. We are currently still staying at our rented place, as the apartment has a tenant, and we will only shift in by Dec.

This is a milestone for us as a family, and hopefully we will do well with this investment!

We don’t know how things will work out but we are just going to trust God and take one step at a time!

My famous Grandfather – Lee Dai Soh

In May 2007, I watched a play by a local drama company (Toy Factory) called “Big Fool Lee”. I was pleasantly surprised by the impact that my grandfather had on the local population and the role he played in early Singapore.

Big_fool_lee

The programme on the local production reads:

“He built a stage 'on air'.
He used his voice as strength.
He captured the hearts of many with ethnic stories.
He lit up the lights of knowledge.
He was a true culture not only to Singaporeans but also beyond.
He is Big Fool Lee!”

lee_dai_soh_1960_nhb
I never really knew my grandfather, as he had two wives, and he was too traditional to really “hang out” with his grandchildren.

But I remember turning on the Radio (Rediffusion) and hearing his program.

He told stories about the “Monkey God” and other Chinese traditional folk stories….(Frankly, most of the time, I did not really understand the program, as it was in Cantonese)…but his voice was mesmerizing even for a 5 yr old boy.

daiso

My mum who is his daughter, tells me that when he used to tell his stories in Chinatown, many would charge for his stories.

With his animated gestures, you will get to hear him tell his stories for the duration of a joss stick. When the joss stick stopped burning…that was how much your payment was worth.

According to my research from the National Library Achieves (Not bad right…they actually recorded him as a national icon), he was born Lee Dai Sor (b. 1913 - d. 22 March 1989, Singapore), or Lee Dai Soh, or Li Da Sha

He was a renowned Cantonese storyteller and especially popular among radio listeners in the 1950s and '60s.

Early Life
Lee was born Lee Fook Hung in Telok Blangah. In his first month, he was struck by a strange illness and lost his voice. Thinking that he was dying, his mother abandoned him at a rubbish dump, but he was discovered and returned by a beggar. Subsequently he recovered from the illness and regained his voice.

Accomplishments
His career as a storyteller started in 1938 when he joined RTM and hosted a Cantonese programme,

Lee's career expanded when Rediffusion started in Singapore in 1949. This provided him an additional platform for his storytelling. His storytelling struck a chord among the radio listeners and he became a household name among the listeners during the 1950s and '60s.

At the height of his career, in 1963, he was hosting up to 20 programmes weekly for Rediffusion as well as for local and Malaysian radio stations. In the early '60s, he was also invited to star in Hong Kong movies but he declined due to his busy schedule. However, he did oblige with guest appearances in a handful of movies.

learn_mandarin

The launch of the Speak Mandarin Campaign in 1979 marked the end of Lee's broadcasting career, as the local radio stations and Rediffusion were made to cease all dialect programmes by the end of 1982 (Actually, i vaguely remember these posters…with a dress and bell bottoms like that…I don’t think I can actually forget!).

He went on to produce more albums and by end of 1983, he had 12 albums, and the last album consisting eight volumes. Rediffusion ceased its dialect programmes on 30 December 1982 and Lee left the broadcasting scene. However, his storytelling continued through performances at community centres and clan associations. Lee passed away on 22 March 1989 at the age of 76.

Frankly, I did not really get to know my grandfather. In fact, I found out more about my family through the drama, as the researches dug out more thing about my family than I knew.

But my grandpa’s name seems to work wonders whenever I visit the elderly.

I tell them that I am his grandson, and you can see the smile on their faces…

But that is also where the embarrassing part begins…When they start conversing to me in Cantonese, and to their astonishment, they realize that I can hardly muster a reply in my broken Cantonese.

Haha…The ironies of Modern Singapore!

Celebrating Grandpa’s Birthday!

Last week was Grandpa’s birthday, and the kids went to the family’s favourite Cantonese restaurant at Tanjong Pagar.

DSC_0042

It was Grandpa’s 72th birthday, and we are so glad to celebrate his birthday together with him!

It was also extra significant, as this is Dad’s first birthday as a Christian! He was so excited when his Cell group celebrated his bdae for him a few days earlier. He even asked me to make sure that I get him to cg early…(He doesn’t make many requests, so to get one, is already not the norm)

DSC_0074

As usual, the kids loved the celebrations even more, especially when there were cakes and candles included.

DSC_0077

Nathan and Nicole fought over the blowing of candles and the cake cutting! (Look at Nathan stretching his hands over his sister, so as to cut the cake!)

DSC_0091

The kids loved the celebration and even Nadine enjoyed her moments with grandma!

DSC_0085

We had great fun and we are looking forward to Grandpa’s next birthday!
